An Alcalde man died Sunday morning after he drove his car into a tree, according to the Rio Arriba County Sheriff’s department.
Juan Martinez, 66, ran off the right hand side of County Road 40 at midnight and collided with a tree, according to deputy Delfin Quintana and dispatch logs.
The airbags deployed in Martinez’s Pontiac Grand Am, and he was conscious and breathing when help arrived, according to dispatch logs.
Martinez was airlifted to St. Vincent Hospital in Santa Fe, where he died shortly after being admitted, Quintana said. The state Office of the Medical Investigator has not yet provided more detailed information about his injuries.
No evidence of alcohol or drug use was found in the vehicle, Quintana said, but family members said he suffered from seizures.
“He may have had a seizure and that’s why he went off the road,” Quintana said.
