Lightning has caused another fire in the Santa Fe National Forest, this time about five miles north of Coyote on top of Mesa Alta.
Forest spokeswoman Dolores Maese said the fire is believed to have started Aug. 8, but it may have started earlier and smoldered until then.
“It was one of those sleepers,” she said.
She said as of Tuesday afternoon it was at about 150 acres, and smoke from the fire is visible from Coyote to the Abiquiú Dam.
“There is no threat to private property or structures,” said Thelma Chavez, business management officer with the Coyote Ranger District.
Chavez said it is being monitored by Coyote District firefighters and will be allowed to burn.
