Police Blotter: Man Offers Earrings, Steals Rake

    Española Police, Ohkay Owingeh Tribal Police, Rio Arriba County Sheriff’s deputies and State Police responded to the following calls:

Drunk Patient

Monday, April 20

    • 8:44 a.m. — A Santo Niño Lane caller said a Mexican man went to her house and tried to give her an earring, while telling her the dirtiest words. He also stole her rake. Police assisted.

    • 10:10 a.m. — A North Coronado Avenue caller said he found a safe in his yard. It was returned to the owner.

    • 4:43 p.m. — An Española Hospital caller said a highly intoxicated patient who had been discharged wanted to leave on foot. His family was located to pick him up.

Landlady Thwarts Moving Day

Tuesday, April 21

    • 5:38 a.m. — A Calle del Pajarito caller said she told a man at her door that she had to go to work and they should leave, and he broke her tooth. She said she didn’t need an ambulance. Both the suspect and victim were tribal members, so Santa Clara Tribal Police was contacted.

    • 8:53 a.m. — A Community Bank vice president said someone tried unsuccessfully to break into the ATM machine and there was rebar and rocks near it. Police took a report for a burglary.

    • 11:81 a.m. — A Calle Alfonsa caller said his landlady locked him out of his place during the middle of him moving out. The landlady claimed he owed her some money. They were referred to the courts.

Wednesday, April 22

    • 12:01 a.m. — An El Paisano employee said a man was trying to shoplift and had friends trying to break in the back of the store. When police arrived the employee said the would-be thieves had paid for their items but when asked to leave, they got out of control. One admitted to drinking and was detoxed.

    • 4:45 p.m. — A Rio Arriba County Road 45 caller said he wanted his sister removed from his home because she was drinking. Police advised him he could not stop his sister from drinking and if it was not a life or death emergency to not call 911.

    • 5:12 p.m. — A County Road 127 caller said her ex-boyfriend tried to wreck her car. She said he believed she took his gun and was going crazy trying to look for it at the house. The man told police the situation was blown out of proportion and he was getting a ride to his mother’s.

    • 8:21 p.m. — A County Road 41 caller said she and her two daughters lived with her brother and their parents, and she did not feel comfortable around her brother because he was recently arrested for selling cocaine. She wanted him removed from the home although he was not doing anything wrong at that point. Police advised her they couldn’t remove him unless he was committing a crime or the homeowners wanted him gone. “(The woman) advised ‘thanks for the (expletive) help,’” dispatchers recorded. She hung up and didn’t pick up when dispatchers called back.

Thursday, April 23

    • 4:17 p.m. — A caller said he was with a ditch cleaning crew at Private Drive 1120 and a man came out of his house, pointed a gun at them and told them to get off his property. Police made contact with the homeowner, who said the gun-wielding man didn’t live there but goes there to use the Internet. He was no longer there and no report was wanted.

    • 4:22 p.m. — A Highway 84/64 caller said he was going to evict a man from his property whom he had hired to take care of his horses. He said the man had been causing problems. The man was advised to keep away from the residence.

Postal Fraud

Friday, April 24

    • 1:55 p.m. — A State Road 76 caller said someone stole a rug from her. He was supposed to bring it back but refused and took off toward Taos. No report was wanted on the civil matter.

    • 3:34 p.m. — A woman, who made a walk-in report at the Española Police Station, said she received a letter from the post office stating she would be out of town and not to deliver her mail. She said she never sent the letter. Police took a report for fraud.

    • 9:50 p.m. — A caller said she found a letter on her car at Big Rock Casino’s parking lot saying they were watching her. Police took a report for harassment.

Saturday, April 25

    • 3:45 a.m. — A State Road 221 caller asked if she could shoot someone. She said she had an unexpected male visitor who told her his friend was after her son. She said she had a right to protect herself. Police did a welfare check and found that everything was OK.

    • 4:04 a.m. — A Paseo de Paulina caller said a crazy woman was banging on his windows and doors. She left.

    • 10:31 a.m. — A County Road 142 caller said his neighbor stole her boyfriend’s chainsaw, and there were footprints leading to the neighbor’s house. Police took a report.

    • 6:26 p.m. — A Family Dollar customer said a man was selling candy and harassing customers. He was gone when police arrived.

Sunday, April 26

    • 11:04 a.m. — A County Road 41 caller said she believed her daughter’s boyfriend stole a flat-screen TV from her son. Police took a report. 

    • 2:37 p.m. — A Dairy Queen employee said a man had been locked in the women’s bathroom for more than 25 minutes, and when she asked if he was OK, he told her he was busy. She said he left but must have been doing drugs, and she would call if he returned.
