Health Care Debate Blame Misplaced

Interesting piece in the Op-ed page of your Aug. 20 issue blaming the ”right wing” for the delay in the President’s health care efforts. Blame a little misplaced I would say since the Dems have overwhelming majorities in the House and the Senate. Republicans are almost irrelevant.

I’m constantly amazed that so many peoples’ politics in the area consist of hating the other party. Guess which party is the object of the hate? One seldom hears what the individual is for and why; just what he or she is against. Defining the other party is not a political philosophy. Liberals accuse conservatives of hate and hate them for it.

I won’t make the case for or against social security, Medicare, or Medicaid. My point is that all three programs are in deep financial trouble. People on social security draw what they contributed in about five years after retirement. That means working stiffs are paying the bill.

Fine, but let’s be honest about it. Medicare is going broke. The proposal is to add 50 million more to government health care. The claim is that it will save money in the long term. You believe that, you believe in La Llorona.

What all this means is that we, the taxpayers, have to pony up. It’s disingenuous to claim the rich will pay and that eliminating waste, fraud, and abuse will make it all cost neutral.

The presidnet needs to do what Bush should’ve done: recruit advisors from Northern New Mexico.
