The Carson National Forest is offering one final public-comment period on proposed changes to roads and off-highway vehicle trails on the Canjilon, El Rito and Tres Piedras ranger districts.

The proposed actions would accomplish the following:

    • Prohibit motor vehicle use on 269 miles of maintenance level 2 roads.

    • Allow motor vehicle use on approximately 33 miles of existing unauthorized roads. The new road sections would be managed as maintenance level 2.

    • Add a 300-foot corridor for motor vehicle use along 343 miles of road, and a 150-foot corridor along 475 miles, to use for dispersed camping and retrieving downed big game.

    • Remove 13 miles of existing corridor on the Tres Piedras District within a northern goshawk post-fledgling area.

    • Change the vehicle class on approximately five miles of road on the Canjilon District, from “open to all motorized vehicles” to “open to motor vehicles 50 inches or less in width.”

    • Prohibit motor vehicle use from January 1 to April 30 on designated roads in the vicinity of Mesa de las Viejas and Mesa Juan Domingo, in the vicinity of Comanche Canyon and south of Forest Road 137.

    • Prohibit motor vehicle use from May 1 to July 25 on eight miles of Forest Road 80.

    • Prohibit cross-country travel by motor vehicles on an additional 510,599 acres.

Large-scale maps, the proposed action and associated analysis and alternatives can be obtained from the supervisor’s office in Taos or at district offices in Canjilon, El Rito and Tres Piedras.

Comments should be submitted by mail to Forest Supervisor, Travel Management Team, 208 Cruz Alta Road, Taos, NM, 87571; by phone to (575) 758-6200; or faxed to (575) 758-6213. Comments may also be submitted by e-mail to comments-southwestern-carson@fs.fed.us.

Names and addresses of people who comment will become part of the public record.

The comment period ends 30 days from July 16, the anticipated publication date of a legal notice in the Taos News.
