In celebration of National Fishing Day this Saturday, anglers will be permitted to fish without a license in all non-tribal public waterways throughout New Mexico.
Heron Lake State Park, near Tierra Amarilla, will hold its first-ever fishing derby from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m., with prizes and hands-on instruction for children. Participants can sign up at Ridge Rock.
Heron Lake is located 11 miles west of Tierra Amarilla on State Road 95. Day access to the park requires a $5 fee per vehicle. For more information, call (575) 588-7470.
Eagle Rock Lake, located one mile east of Questa on State Road 38, will also hold a fish fiesta from 8 a.m. to noon.
During the free fishing day, all normal fishing rules still apply, including bag and possession limits. For a complete list of rules and regulations, visit www.wildlife.state.nm.us.
Anglers 11 years old and younger are never required to have a fishing license to fish in non-tribal public waterways. New Mexico residents 70 and older need a license, but they may obtain one free of charge from any Department office or license vendor.
