The Mesa Vista Lady Trojans toyed with the Bosque School Lady Bobcats, winning easily 52-17 Jan. 2 in Ojo Caliente.
The victory raises Mesa Vista’s record to an impressive 10-1 overall. The Trojans lone loss came Dec. 12 to Mora, 52-45, in the championship game of the Northern Rio Grande Tournament. The Trojans have won three consecutive games since that loss.
“It’s hard,” Mesa Vista coach Richard Montoya said. “We haven’t had any real competition since Mora.”
The Trojans jumped out to a 14-2 lead in the first quarter against the Bobcats behind 11 points by Carmelita Trujillo. Mesa Vista extended its lead to 16 points at halftime. Julia Martinez’s eight points in the third quarter helped the Trojans widen their lead to 23 points. The Trojans outscored the Bobcats 16-4 in the fourth quarter to win going away.
Trujillo finished with 24 points, and Martinez added 14. Bosque, which owns victories over Coronado and Santa Fe Prep, fell to 3-3 on the season.
“We started off with a half-court trap and never took it off because it worked so well,” Montoya said. “We got a lot of layups.”
The Trojans had defeated the Española Valley junior varsity team 72-30 Dec. 28 at home. The Trojans outscored the Lady Sundevils 21-3 in the second quarter and led 31-13 at halftime. Crystal Martinez led the Trojans with 26 points and Trujillo added 18 for Mesa Vista.
The Trojans were to have hosted a tournament Dec. 28 to 31, but couldn’t find teams with open dates for the tournament. Española was the only team that could participate.
The Trojans traveled to Pecos Tuesday to take on the Lady Panthers. Montoya was looking forward to a better game on the road.
“(Pecos) already has beaten Mora, so it should be a quality game,” Montoya said. “Pecos will tell me where I’m at.”
