Police Blotter: Armed Men Rendezvous in Rio Chama before Heading to Mountains

    Española Police, Ohkay Owingeh Tribal Police, Rio Arriba County Sheriff’s deputies and State Police responded to the following calls:

Bomb Threat

Monday, March 29

    • 8:54 a.m. — Someone broke into the Arby’s on North Riverside Drive and stole the meat slicer, according to 911 dispatch logs.

    • 9:45 a.m. — Someone shot a window at the Santa Clara Apartments on Calle Chamisal, according to a caller.

    • 10:02 a.m. — A Dandy Burger caller complained that someone etched all of the windows to the business, including a Federal Express box. The caller believed it could have been an ex-employee, but she did not have evidence to prove that.

    • 1:46 p.m. — A man told State Police that a pickup truck drove through a yard, damaged a septic line and nearly ran him over on Rio Arriba County Road 86.

    • 2:21 p.m. — A man said he was parked at Ohkay Express Mart when another man started threatening him and tossing rocks at his car. The caller left and told officers the incident may have stemmed from an earlier incident in which the caller had been attacked by men with bats.

    • 3:24 p.m. — Students were accused of damaging a vehicle in the teacher’s parking lot at Española Valley High School.

    • 4:18 p.m. — There was a report of an assault at San Juan Elementary and a child was sent to a hospital and was discharged a short time later. The student had been punched several times in the head, according to the call log.

    • 6:29 p.m. — A pit bull attempted to attack a girl near Cuchilla Road.

    • 6:46 p.m. — State Police took a call from someone who claimed a man threatened to slit someone’s throat and blow up a house.

Tuesday, March 30

    • 8:44 a.m. — Staff at Española Valley High School claimed they found a student in the bathroom with some kind of white substance.

    • 1:02 p.m. — A caller reported a suspicious man standing by some newspaper boxes along North Riverside Drive. The caller had heard the man take a phone call and discuss a drug deal, according to dispatch logs.

    • 2:59 p.m. — A school administrator called in a complaint about a student breaking into another student’s locker at Española Middle School and stealing a cell phone and other items.

    • 4:55 p.m. — About seven shots were fired near Private Drive 1037, according to dispatch logs. Police could not locate the source of the gunshots.

    • 6:35 p.m. — A caller complained about a group of people sitting around a concession stand and drinking at Vietnam Veterans Memorial Park.

    • 6:57 p.m. — A caller reported someone who had been in an ATV accident near Private Drive 1647. The man was bleeding from a laceration to the head. At the time of the call, logs note that a caller said no one was intoxicated. Logs later note that another individual stated they had been drinking.

Trouble-Making Cows

Wednesday, March 31

    • 7:47 a.m. — There was a complaint of cows on the road on El Llano Road. After about 15 minutes, someone reported that the cows were off the roadway, but said “I don’t think they will stay there long.”

    • 8:04 a.m. — There was a report of an unconscious man on East Laguna Street who was unresponsive and nearly hit by a car.

    • 9:43 a.m. — A caller reported two males at Velarde Elementary hit an 11-year-old girl with their hands.

    • 10:30 a.m. — Police assisted a Calle Ranchitos man who lost his garage door controller and could not get the door open.

    • 2:40 p.m. — There was a crash at the Española Car Wash. A male complained of a head and neck injury. One person was taken to the emergency room following the crash.

    • 3:40 p.m. — A caller complained that two people were attempting to have sex on North McCurdy Road.

    • 4:33 p.m. — Police took a report of an assault at Rigobertos Taco Shop. A caller said a man there had been beaten up and had a bloody nose.

    • 7:13 p.m. — State Police received a call regarding six cars filled with men who were meeting near Rio Chama. The men allegedly had guns and were going to a mountain to fight.

    • 7:53 p.m. — Following a complaint of a vehicle crash on North Riverside Drive, one of the people involved in the crash noticed that the occupants of the other car were throwing something in a nearby trash bin. Movies from a Movie Gallery were discovered in the trash bin. Staff at the business said the movies had been missing. Police left the movies with a manager.

Car Flipped

Thursday, April 1

    • 12:48 a.m. — Four gunshots were heard on Paseo De Onate, according to dispatch logs.

    • 10:51 a.m. — A caller at the Princess Boutique reported that the business was broken into the previous night and several items appeared to be missing.

    • 4:23 p.m. — Walgreens employees reported that they received a forged prescription for Percocet.    

    • 7:25 p.m. — Police assisted on a report of a suicidal female who had stabbed herself in the wrist. The person was transported to Española Hospital, according to dispatch logs.

    • 9:25 p.m. — A blue Mercedes in Hernandez flipped over when, as the caller claimed, it was hit by a black two-door car, which fled. Two passengers in the vehicle that flipped got out and left after the crash.

Unlucky Gambler

Friday, April 2

    • April 2, 7:37 a.m. — Two rifles — one pink and another black — were stolen from Walmart, dispatch logs state.

    • 1:49 p.m. — Dispatch took a call about a male and female fighting alongside the road on North Riverside Drive. According to the caller, the male knocked the female down about three or four times.

    • 4:18 p.m. — Dispatch took a call stating that a woman was about to put $20 into a machine at the Big Rock Casino when another woman grabbed the money out of her hand and left.

    • 6:23 p.m. — A fight was reported at the Dairy Queen.

Marijuana Theft Reported to 911

Saturday, April 3

    • 12:23 a.m. A Santa Clara Apartments caller complained that a friend of his was trying to break into his vehicle. He said he thought his friend stole his “weed.”

    • 4:16 a.m. — A caller reported a vehicle rolled over by Paseo De Onate and North Railroad Avenue. The caller said a man got out of the vehicle and left after trying to get something out of the trunk.

    • 1:01 p.m. — Ditch workers reported they were being harassed in the area of County Road 57 while trying to work.

    • 4:01 p.m. — A caller said a 13 year-old girl was bitten by a dog on Megill Street. The call was made from the emergency room of Española Hospital.

    • 4:15 p.m. — The Sheriff’s Office responded to a report about a man who was going around to houses on County Road 19 and knocking on doors. A caller later reported that someone had hit the man with a golf club. The man was taken to an emergency room.

    • 8:22 p.m. — People were burning weeds on County Road 59 and caught a tree on fire, according to the log. Officers cleared the scene about one hour later.

Burn Rubber

Sunday, April 4

    • 4:34 a.m. — A man on County Road 94 claimed to State Police that someone cut him across the head. Police later learned that a female there was punched during the assault.

    • 6:28 a.m. — A pile of burning tires was reported by a caller near County Road 41.

    • 11:35 a.m. — There was a report of a brush fire along County Road 51.

    • 12:42 p.m. — State Police received a tip about a white Dodge Caravan driving erratically on Highway 285. The caller said the people inside were passing around a bong.

    • 9:20 p.m. — There was a motor vehicle crash on South Riverside Drive, according to a log. A man suffered a laceration to his arm following the crash.
