Police Blotter: Teens Up to No Good in Playground Tunnel

    Española Police, Ohkay Owingeh Tribal Police, Rio Arriba County Sheriff’s deputies and State Police responded to the following calls:

Snake Alarm

Monday, April 26

    • 12:57 a.m. — A caller driving along Highway 64/84 near Dulce said he hit a deer, which “bashed” in his front windshield.

    • 1:0 a.m. (sic) — 911 dispatch received a call about a motor vehicle crash on State Road 68 in the Rio Grande canyon. A motorcyclist said a car pulled out in front of him, and he had to skid out of the way to avoid hitting it. The other vehicle left the scene, but the caller took a picture of the vehicle’s license plate.

    • 9:55 — a.m. A state Corrections Department van was at the intersection of State Roads 68 and 74 with people who were picking up trash along the road. A Pojoaque Tribal Police officer said she was flagged down by the Department employee who reported finding a cigarette box with marijuana in it along the road.

    • 10:19 a.m. — A Walgreens caller reported that someone entered her unlocked car and stole her Suboxone pills.

    • 10:55 p.m. — A Valdez Park caller reported seeing about four teenagers in the tunnels in the jungle gym. She believed the teenagers were “doing things” in there. She said they came out adjusting their clothes.

    • 12:04 p.m. — A Fairview Lane caller said she was walking when she saw a “huge” rattlesnake. Animal Control reported that the snake was, in fact, a water snake and it went under a bridge there.

    • 12:10 p.m. — A San Pedro Road caller reported that two rifles were stolen from a home: a .22 and a .270 Remington.

    • 2:07 p.m. — A motorcyclist allegedly flashed a gun at someone who was on Paseo de Oñate by Northern New Mexico College’s campus.

    • 2:49 p.m. — A Jicarilla Apache Nation caller said someone was shooting a gun in the area of his residence and a bullet went through his door.

    • 3:03 p.m. — An Española Elementary caller reported that an ice cream vendor was being a nuisance by refusing to leave, causing a safety issue and causing children to miss the bus.

    • 4:28 p.m. — A caller said a washing machine that he had just purchased from Lowe’s Home Improvement was stolen from the back of his truck.

    • 7:55 p.m. — A coyote was running through a neighborhood at Valley Drive, according 911 dispatch logs.

Gruesome Injury

Tuesday, April 27

    • 3:43 a.m. — A Pinch Penny Wash-O-Mat caller reported that a male was threatening her by holding a knife to her ribs.

    • 7:40 a.m. — A Española Teen Technology Center caller reported that the Center’s basketball goal had been stolen.

    • 9:17 a.m. — A Coronado Avenue caller reported that a dog, which had been tied to a truck, was possibly missing.

    • 9:35 p.m. — Rio Arriba County Jail staff reported finding a bag of marijuana.

    • 9:56 a.m. — A U-Haul trailer was stolen from Total Secure Self Storage on Paseo de Oñate, dispatch logs state.

    • 12:03 p.m. — A County Road 56 A man was transported to an emergency room after he suffered a third-degree burn to his leg from a motorcycle, a caller reported. The burn, which was deep and left an exposed tendon, occurred three days prior to the call.

    • 1:10 p.m. — There was a false fire alarm at Escalante High School. The school was having a fire drill.

    • 2:02 p.m. — A parent wanted to get money back from Radio Shack after reporting that her son had been stealing money from her to buy things there.

    • 2:06 p.m. — An El Centro Family Health caller reported that a patient’s chart was stolen.

    • 2:30 p.m. — About $140 in cash was stolen from a vehicle parked at Española Hospital.

    • 5:29 p.m. — A Rio Arriba County Road 1 caller reported that shots were fired in a yard and someone had also pointed a gun at her.

    • 7:38 p.m. — A North Railroad Avenue caller reported that a man was covered in blood and walking up to customers at Angelina’s restaurant. It was later learned that the man had a nosebleed.

    • 9:37 p.m. — A Private Drive 1034 A caller reported that there was a suicidal person fighting with family members. A grandmother had a panic attack, according to dispatch logs.

    • 10:20 p.m. — A caller on Calle Rodriguez reported two males pulled into his driveway. One of the men had his face covered and had his hand behind his back. The man stole a six pack of beer from the victim’s hand.

Chased by Thugs

Wednesday, April 28

    • 12:14 a.m. — Española Police went to Gallegos Scrap Metal to investigate wires that were stolen from a telephone company. Police called staff with Windstream Communications to return it.

    • 8:32 a.m. — Graffiti was reported on the side of Yvonne Quintana’s law office on South Paseo de Oñate.

    • 8:45 a.m. — Students were caught pulling the fire alarm at Española Middle School.

    • 9:46 a.m. — About $600 of tools were missing from a trailer.

    • 12:40 p.m. — Two female students fought at Española Middle School.    

    • 5:38 p.m. — There was a bomb report at Northern New Mexico College in Española. Officers cleared the scene about two hours later without finding a bomb.

    • 8:46 p.m. — Two suspected gang members were chasing a male on Jackrabbit Trail.

    • 9:53 p.m. — A County Road 56A man reported that someone hit him on the head with a pipe while he was trying to collect some money. The victim said he blacked out but he refused an ambulance.

Thursday, April 29

    • 8:27 a.m. — A toolbox was stolen from a teacher’s vehicle at San Juan Elementary.

    • 8:38 a.m. — Batteries were stolen from construction equipment at State Road 76.

    • 9:46 a.m. — A Private Drive 1514 caller reported seeing an unconscious driver whose vehicle was in an arroyo.

    • 1:08 p.m. — There was a complaint of intoxicated people drinking at Walmart. They were allegedly harassing customers, the caller said.

    • 2 p.m. — Fire crews extinguished a fire in an attic.

    • 3:05 p.m. — A tree fell through the roof of a trailer on Private Drive 1030.

    • 5:37 p.m. — Police assisted State Police with a report of a suicidal person at State Road 215.

    • 5:40 p.m. — A Dreamcatcher Cinema caller said a vehicle was following him and people inside the cinema were threatening to shoot him. The victim told dispatch someone got out of the vehicle and kicked his vehicle.

    • 8:41 p.m. — An assault was reported on State Road 576 in which the victim asked someone for help digging a ditch. That person got offended and punched the victim in the face. The 63 year-old man was transported by an ambulance to a hospital.

    • 10:42 p.m. — A man in Club Tropicana was reportedly trying to hit himself in the face with a hammer in an attempt to kill himself. The caller took the hammer away from the man.

Friday, April 30

    • 8:29 a.m. — Police took a report of battery involving two male students at Española Middle School.

    • 8:58 a.m. — Dispatch took a report about someone who tried to break in through a window of the Western Winds Motel.

    • 12:15 p.m. — There was a report of a residence that was shot at on Valley Drive. Police looked for the suspect’s vehicle but were unable to find it.

    • 1:53 p.m. — Dispatch received a call of a man who was punched in the face by his father at Valley Superette.

    • 2:17 p.m. — Dispatch received a report of two security guards being assaulted by students in two separate incidents at Española Valley High School.

    • 3:35 p.m. — A Walmart caller reported that a woman tackled her to the ground and tried to steal her money.

    • 6:30 p.m. — A caller reported that a large dog was fighting a small dog on Calle Flores.

Hoe or Knife

Saturday, May 1

    • 12:24 a.m. — A driver hit an elk along Highway 64/84.

    • 12:16 p.m. A motor vehicle with skull murals and a grim reaper decoration on the fender was stolen from Paseo de Oñate.

    • 2:10 p.m. — Two people were transported to the hospital after hitting a rock wall near El Paragua Restaurant.

    • 6:09 p.m. — There was a report of a domestic dispute involving someone who had either a hoe or knife in his hand along Valley Drive.

Cocaine Buyer

Sunday, May 2

    • 1:40 p.m. — A Walmart shopper got involved in a dispute with an employee because she did not want to show a receipt as she left the store. Española Police reviewed the tapes.

    • 5:03 p.m.—  There was a report of a suspicious person at the Hindi Shell Station who was asking to buy cocaine.

    • 11:52 p.m. — A man said he was assaulted near Holy Cross Church by someone who stole his money. The man later said he did not want to make a report with an officer.
