Area high school track teams had mixed results at their respective district meets last week.
Leading the way were small schools such as Dulce whose boys and girls teams came away with district team titles.
Below is a run down ofall the area district meets. The District 2AA and 3AA track and field meets were held April 30 at Dulce, while District 2AAA and District 2AAAA meets were held Saturday at Santa Fe Indian School and Los Alamos Hogh School, respectively. The first-and-second place finishers qualify for the state meets to be held this week in Albuquerque.
District 2AA
The Dulce boys and girls teams each took first place at the District 2AA meet. The boys scored 182 points and the girls had 170 points.
For the boys, Dulce’s Graham Thomas won the 800-meter and 1600-meter runs, while also taking first in the pole vault. Dakota Petago won the discus and Dulce’s 1600-meter relay team took first place.
For the girls, Kaitlyn Vigil won five events: the long jump, triple jump, 100-meter run, 200-meter run and 400-meter run. Kyetiil Vicenti won the high jump, 100-meter hurdles and javelin. Kristen Calabaza was first in the 3200-meter run and Tracy Mescal won the discus.
Escalante finished second in the boys standings with 143 points. Justin Atencio won the javelin, shot put and 110-meter hurdles. John Salazar was first in the long jump and 100-meter run. Eric Belser was first in the high jump, 200-meter run and 400-meter run. The Lobos 400-meter and 800-meter relay teams both took first.
The Escalante girls were third with 97 points behind Dulce and Navajo Prep. Bonnie Salazar won the shot put, Annah Martinez was first in the 300-meter hurdles and the Escalante 800-meter relay took first.
District 3AA
The Mesa Vista boys team took second place at the District 3AA meet in Dulce. The boys scored 118 points. Peñasco was first with 162 points. McCurdy took third with 77 points.
Mesa Vista’s Alex Griego won the 300-meter hurdles and Lorenzo Sanchez won the 400-meter run. Andres Coronado won the pole vault.
McCurdy’s 400-meter and 800-meter relay teams took first place. Randy Martinez won the 100- and 200-meter runs, Carlos Herrera won the high jump and Destin Woelfel took first place in the javelin.
The Mesa Vista girls finished second behind Questa with 112 points. Julia Martinez won the 800-meter run, and Selina Siqueros won the 400-meter run.
Carmelita Trujillo won the shot put and Brandy Valdez won the long jump The Lady Trojans’ 800-meter 1600-meter and 1600-medley relay all took first place.
McCurdy scored 40 points and finished fourth Novela Salazar won the discus and Madison Woelfel took the high jump. The Lady Bobcats’ 400-meter relay team finished first.
District 2AAAA
The Española Valley Sundevils boys track and field team finished fifth among five teams at the District 2AAAA meet with 34 points.
Los Alamos was first with 240 points. Bernalillo and Capital tied for second place, each scoring 65 points.
Rudy Salazar III was a workhorse for the Sundevils. He placed second and qualified for state in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:10.59, edging out Los Alamos’ Ian Pulliam. Los Alamos’ Zach Breshears had a time of 2:05.97 in first place.
Salazar ran the anchor leg of the 1600-meter medley relay that finished second to Los Alamos and also qualified for the state meet. Estevan Borrego and Paul Bustamante each ran a 200-meter leg of the relay, while C. J. Berryman ran the 400-meter leg. Salazar passed runners from Capital and Taos in the final 800-meters.
Berryman had previously qualified for state in the 110-meter hurdles.
The Española girls team finished fourth at the District meet with 43 points. Los Alamos took first with 242 points.
Lady Sundevil senior Nisa Duran won the triple jump with a leap of 31 feet, 7.5 inches. The girls 1600-meter medley team of Duran, Desiree Howie, Adrianna Mondragon and Erika Sanchez qualified for state with a second-place finish behind Los Alamos.
District 2AAA
The Pojoaque Elkettes finished third at the District 2AAA meet behind first-place Robertson at 128 points and second-place St. Michael’s with 97 points.
Pojoaque senior Dionna Montoya took first in the 800-meter run, second in the 400-meter run, second in the long jump and third in the 200-mter run, qualifying by time. Junior Kimberly Babicke won the 200-meter run and took third in the long jump. Babicke had already qualified in the 100-meter run and long jump.
Pojoaque won the 1600-meter relay, took second in the 800-meter and 1600-medley relay and third in the 400-meter relay. Pojoaque had already qualified all four relays by time.
Sophia Torres finished third in the 1600-meter run. She has state-qualifying times in the 800- to 1600-meter runs.
The Pojoaque boys team scored 10 points and finished sixth. Senior James Viarreal is the only state qualifier for the Elks with a time of 4:46.44 in the 1600-meter run.
