(SUNfoto by Lou Mattei) Española Police evidence technician Christine Gehrmann searched Jan. 20 a white Chevrolet Suburban with Colorado license plates registered to Jesus Meraz at Holmes Wrecker Service in Española. Det. Bryan Martinez said Jesus Meraz is the father of Jose Meraz, 29, who Española Police arrested Dec. 29 on suspicion of burglarizing the State Road 76 home of Daniel Esquibel. Martinez said police had been tipped off that there was a “strong possibility” Jose Meraz had been involved with a Mexican drug cartel shipping narcotics in the region, prompting the search of the truck. The search turned up clothes, blankets and a bag of red chile, but little in the way of contraband — only a few new and used syringes, a burnt spoon and some prescription pills. Jose Meraz was charged with one felony count of being a fugitive from justice out of Pueblo, Colo., and one felony count of burglary, and was awaiting extradition to Colorado last week, according to court records.
