An Española city councilor’s daughter was arrested during the early hours of May 14 for DWI and fleeing the police.
Española Police Lt. Christian Lopez, who was reading from a police report of the incident, said Cpl. Daniel Espinoza arrested Angelica Seeds, 22, the daughter of District 4 Councilor Robert Seeds. Angelica Seeds was driving east on La Joya Street in a 2009 gray Pontiac while the officer was heading in the opposite direction on the same road. Lopez said Espinoza clocked Angelica Seeds driving 45 mph in a 25 mph zone.
He said when the officer tried to pull Angelica Seeds over for speeding, she attempted to evade him, accelerating to speeds of 75 mph. He said Angelica Seeds turned left on South McCurdy Road at which point she got stuck behind another driver. Lopez said when Espinoza was able to pull Angelica Seeds over, he smelled alcohol and asked her to take a field sobriety test, which she failed.
Espinoza placed Angelica Seeds under arrest at which point she said, “I am Robert Seeds’ daughter,” according to Lopez. He said Espinoza took Angelica Seeds to Española Jail and gave her a Breathalyzer test twice. Her blood alcohol levels were 0.19 and 0.18, more than twice the legal limit for driving, Lopez said.
Angelica Seeds was charged with aggravated DWI, evading an officer, reckless driving and speeding in Santa Fe County Magistrate Court, Lopez said.
A copy of the police report had not been released as of Tuesday.
“She made a mistake,” Robert Seeds said. “She knows better.”
Robert Seeds said he saw his daughter at the Santa Claran Hotel and Casino the night of May 13 and offered her a lift home. He said she told him she had a friend coming to give her a ride.
The councilor said he received a call from his daughter early on May 14 saying she had been picked up for DWI.
“This is kind of a shot of reality,” he said.
Robert Seeds said he was glad his daughter didn’t get hurt, nor did she hurt anyone else.
“It gave me a reality check — that this can happen to us,” Robert Seeds said.
