(SUNfoto by George Morse) Bernie Foy (center, with binoculars) lead a diverse group of bird watchers on “A Vertical Mile of Birding” trip sponsored by the Sangre de Cristo chapter of the National Audubon Society June 23 in Española. At the old San Juan Bridge, the group saw several species, including yellow-breasted chat, yellow warbler, spotted sandpipers and blue grosbeaks. The trip began in Española and climbed into the Jemez Mountains to 11,000 feet, where the group saw a rare three-toed woodpecker. A total of 81 different species were spotted.
