The deadline to submit a community announcement is Monday at noon the week of publication. Any submissions after that day will not run until the following week. The SUN only publishes free events or fund-raising events for non-profits and activities in Northern Briefs, and gives preference to non-profits. This is a forum for community events. All announcements for events being held by for-profit businesses will be passed on to the advertising department.

• Social security and medicare seminar
American Association of Retired People will host a free forum at the Ohkay Hotel and Casino Conference Center from 9 to 11 a.m. Light refreshments will be served. Residents are encouraged to bring their concerns and opinions on the future of Medicare and Social Security. The benefits of the new health care law will also be discussed. • Garden pest control
A workshop entitled “What’s Bugging You?” will be held at the New Mexico State University Agricultural Science Center in Alcalde. Tess Grasswitz, urban- small farm integrated pest management specialist, will instruct. The free workshop runs from 6 to 7:30 p.m. The station is located at 371 County Road 40 in Alcalde. • Atomic City’s Got Talent
United Way of Northern New Mexico’s Youth Team holds its second event of the campaign season. The Team is working hard to reach its $11,000 fund-raising goal. This 7 p.m. concert showcases local talent at the Duane Smith Auditorium in Los Alamos. Tickets at the door are $12.50 for adults, $10 for seniors and students, and $7.50 for children 12 and under.

The YouthBuild Program is accepting applications. The Program provides assistance with obtaining a high school diploma or general education development certificate, among other skills and training.
