Española police and federal authorities had for more than a month been searching for Maestas, who allegedly stole an AR-15 rifle from Wal-Mart. Because Wal-Mart has a federal firearms license, agents from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco & Firearms are handling the case, said Española Det. Solomon Romero.
