Las Cruces DogsTaken in byLocal Shelter

The Espanola Valley Humane Society might not have much in the way of funding, staffing or kennel space, but that isn’t stopping the Society from trying to spread some holiday cheer for some down-on-their-luck dogs.

When the staff in Espanola heard the Las Cruces Animal Shelter was beyond capacity, and time was up for a handful of poodles, terriers and other small breed dogs, Española Animal Shelter staffers went into action.

The staff of 16 handles about 4,000 animals each year at their shelter, and with an adoption fair Saturday at PetSmart in Santa Fe, they thought a fair number of the “death row dogs” could be adopted out without too much trouble. They found foster homes for the 20 small dogs to ensure that dogs in need from Rio Arriba County didn’t get displaced and the staff arranged to have the little fluffy crew in Las Cruces brought to the shelter.

“We have our own needs, our own struggles,” shelter manager Lisa Gipe said. “But there is always someone out there who is worse off than you. We all need to pitch in and help those in need during the holidays, and when you see those furry faces, and hear they are out of time, you can’t say no.”

Staff at the shelter in Las Cruces is facing an uphill battle with backyard breeders, so they will receive, literally, thousands of small breed dogs this year, many of them purebred. Espanola Valley Humane Society hopes that the community will recognize the holidays as the perfect time to bring home a new addition.

“Opening up your home to a rescued pet is the ultimate gift,” community outreach Manager Nina Stively said. “You are saving a life, and I think the dogs know it. They are so grateful to you for giving them that second chance.”
