At Long Last,Well 4 Pumps Cleaner

Española’s water supply will soon increase thanks to repairs on the city’s Well 4. It was supposed to have been connected to Well 7 by now for blending. Well 4 has elevated levels of fluoride and arsenic and Well 7 has elevated levels of nitrates. When blended, the resulting water should meet or exceed standards set by the Environmental Protection Agency, said interim City Manager Joe Duran. In April, city workers found that Well 4 was pumping water that was clouded with sand. The engineering firm Wilson & Company sent a camera deep into the well to monitor what was happening. The firm determined several issues could have been affecting the well’s water. Longterm use could have worked the gravel pack loose, letting sand into the well. A well screen or a well plug could also have deteriorated and caused the problem. The firm recommended a short list of repairs that would cost the city $48,707. The repairs have since been made and Well 4 is pumping crystal-clear water, Duran said. He estimated the well should be cleaned, calibrated and in use by this week.
