(SUNfoto by Wheeler Cowperthwaite) Jose Fernandez allegedly careened over one concrete pole and into a concrete barrier (right), which his truck moved out of the way, before coming to a stop Oct. 20, in front of Chuck’s General Store on Riverside Drive. Witnesses told police officers and dispatchers that Fernandez had allegedly been nodding off before he sped from the turn lane, on Riverside Drive toward Fairview Lane, into the Washington Federal parking lot and onward. Española police charged Fernandez, 28, with aggravated DWI and reckless driving. Dispatch logs state callers first reported a driver asleep in the turn lane before Fernandez allegedly crashed through the parking lot.
