I read the Rio Grande SUN many times to learn what opinion is in our community. I read with modest dismay Tom McDonald’s “Dispatch New Mexico,” but, in general people need encouragement about what to do–in their daily behavior–and I thought that Mr. McDonald was being unnecessarily harsh on our institutions. As you read his article, you get the feeling that he is having some change of heart as he writes and, perhaps, he is simply filling up page space unnecessarily. This in spite of the fact that I agree with Mr. McDonald more often than not.
But right below that is an opinion written by Jose Armas and—whew! Again, I probably would not write to the editor at the SUN, and he’s a splendid editor, which is why I write this. Our people do not need a scolding right now. A deadly virus in our midst plagues us, when people are just trying to figure out what to do in their daily lives.
I find that most of the advice that we are given by the press almost daily is useful and that our governing bodies are simply plodding along as best they can. I am pleased with government, both state and federal, as they each try to assist us in affecting our modes of behavior. But, a scolding is right at present not what we need.
I am well aware that a newspaper–any newsworthy paper–does not get to select its opinion makers all of the time. But the April 2 issue was hardly a winner.
