This letter is in response to Joe Salazar’s letter in last week’s Rio Grande SUN.
I stated in a previous letter that I spoke to 20 out of 25 precinct chairs. I was referring to precinct chairs in my District 41 that were involved in my election in 2018 as opposed to precinct chairs in the Rio Arriba Democratic party.
Joe Salazar is a precinct chair in the Rio Arriba Democratic party and he’s right, I didn’t call him.
Many volunteers asked how they could help and I said that I needed precinct chairs, people to help walk the precinct, call voters, and throw a coffee for me in their precinct. So I assembled about 20 volunteers that were unbelievably helpful to me in that campaign. We’ve now become friends and I try and call them just to get their opinions about every three months.
Joe Salazar is married to Joanna Salazar, who is the chair of the Rio Arriba County Democratic Committee. I have known Joanne for years and helped her and the Rio Arriba Democratic party.
I did not seek her endorsement or that of her husband Joe in 2018. As a chair of a Democratic County Committee you have to remain neutral, and I understood that.
After I won the primary, Joanne joined my campaign enthusiastically and we both helped each other over the past two years.
As an active Democrat, I applaud any person who takes on the challenge of running for and serving in public office. I think I have a responsibility to endorse who I think will be the best candidates to represent the North, for that reason I am supporting County Commission Leo Jaramillo for Senate District 5 and Roger Montoya for Representative District 40.
I understand that Joe Salazar is backing their opponents, that’s part of the of the Democratic process. May the best man win.
Susan Herrera
District 41 representative
