The Española Valley High School baseball team had a strong week, winning both games of a doubleheader May 21 at Taos.
The Sundevils scored three runs in the third inning of game one, and held off the Tigers late to win 6-5. Junior Jaydon Girego had a double and two walks, and pitched the last three innings with just one run allowed. Adrian Padilla was the winning pitcher, with four innings pitched and four runs allowed.
In game two, Taos scored three runs in the first, and the Sundevils had to come from behind. They scored two in the third inning to tie, but Taos retook the lead in the fifth. But in the top of the seventh, two runs came across for Española, and they got the win, 5-4.
Sophomore Craig Calvert had three hits in the second game, and scored four runs total in the doubleheader. Junior Santiago Aguilar pitched a complete game, with just one earned run and five strikeouts.
Coach Joe Padilla said the team played really well, and had to play small ball to come away with the wins.
