The McCurdy Charter School track team has competed strongly to start the season, and hopes to highlight their individual achievements through the rest of the year.
Andres Martinez set school records in the long jump – at 21 feet, 6.5 inches – and in the triple jump – 42 feet, 11 inches, and ranks top in the state in both. McCurdy coach Cecilia Brown said they are hoping for him to win at states, and possibly break the state record of 43 feet, 11 inches.
Brown also said the girls relay teams have been especially strong, with the 4×100 meters team breaking the school record with a 54.48 time, and performing strongly at the 400, 800 and 1,600 meters. She said she hopes for those teams to finish in the top three for a medal at states. Other lady Bobcat sprinters have had strong performances.
Kodi Rodriguez also set a school record for the 3,200 meters, with a time of 11:27, despite the challenges of competing outdoors with a mask.
The Bobcats will compete at Friday’s Northern Rio Grande conference meet at Questa alongside Mesa Vista and Escalante, and then at the district meet June 12 in Mora, and several athletes have already qualified for states the next week.
