Española Valley High School released a football schedule for the 2021 fall season to begin just over two months away.

Española will begin its season Aug. 20 with a home game against Los Alamos on a Friday night, and then play 10 games in the next 11 weeks.

A tough matchup will come in their second week Aug. 27 when the Sundevils host Bernalillo, as the Spartans had a strong 4-0 season this spring.

The Sundevils will play their last three games against district opponents Taos, Moriarty, and wrapping up Oct. 29 at Pojoaque.

After a disappointing 0-3 season in 2020, a young Sundevil team will look to grow in a more normal season.

The Pojoaque Valley High School softball team kept strong over the week to maintain first place in the district and stay on the fast track to the state tournament.

The Elkettes defeated Los Alamos 8-6 on June 2, with a four-run sixth inning giving them the burst they needed behind senior Ayana Aguirre’s pitching.

Aguirre pitched a complete-game shutout with just one hit allowed against Taos June 5 in the first game of a doubleheader, and added a home run and five RBIs of her own in a 10-0 win.

Aguirre stayed in the circle for the entire doubleheader, and the Tigers did get on the scoreboard in game two, but the Elkettes held strong offensively for a 14-7 win.

Now 9-5 overall and 7-1 in the district, Pojoaque leads the district by two games over Española with four games remaining, first taking on Moriarty on the road Wednesday (6/9) night.

The Pojoaque baseball team split a doubleheader against Taos June 5, winning the first game 13-6 but falling 12-2 in the second.

The Elks also lost to Los Alamos 5-2 on June 2. They sit at 5-3 in the district, 2.5 games behind the Hilltoppers in first place. To clinch a state tournament bid, they’d likely have to sweep Los Alamos in a June 19 road doubleheader and get outside help.

The McCurdy Charter School baseball team faced their first real test of the season when they fell behind 5-2 on the road against Questa in the first game of a Tuesday doubleheader. But they quickly responded with four runs in the third inning, and held on for a 13-6 win.

In the later game, junior Marcos Gasca pitched a complete game with two runs allowed and 10 strikeouts, and the Bobcats won easily, taking a 13-2 victory in six innings.

At 10-0 on the season and 8-0 in the district, they’ve not yet clinched a district title but appear well on their way to doing so, and can take the crown with a doubleheader Friday at Peñasco.

The Lady Bobcats lost a pair of games in a non-district doubleheader Tuesday, falling 10-0 and 17-2 against St. Michael’s.

McCurdy will return to district play and look to play for a spot in the state tournament, with a test June 15 against Estancia on the road, before wrapping up the regular season June 17 against Mora.
