POLL: Pick the October 13 Athlete of the Week

Published:

Voting ends at 2 p.m. on Tuesday

Brycelyn Martinez, Escalante Volleyball

The senior outside hitter guided the Lady Lobos to a 2-0 start to district play with wins over Questa and Mesa Vista. In the first match, Martinez tallied two aces and 13 kills, five coming in the decisive fourth set. As one of just a couple of returning starters from last year’s state tournament team, Martinez’s leadership is key to the Lady Lobos’ success as they look to repeat as district champions.

Alex Chavez, Española Valley Football

The young running back also found a new role as the team’s backup quarterback, but before that he had a stellar game in a dominant win over Navajo Prep. He finished the day with 115 yards and four touchdowns on the ground, and he added four passing yards on the final drive. After taking a few weeks to find confidence, Chavez has become a decisive runner with impressive stat lines.

Adrick DeLeon, Española Valley Football

Española’s leading receiver continued to put up a big number, catching two long touchdown passes early in the game and setting the tone for a 54-0 win. His three catches for 154 yards and two touchdowns all came in the first 13 minutes of game action, and his connection with quarterback Nate Chacon continues to improve.

Lucas Martinez, McCurdy Football

On what was a tough day for the Bobcats, their quarterback pushed the team to keep fighting. Offensively, despite several setbacks he finally broke through for a touchdown in the third quarter on a 29-yard pass. He added 21 rushing yards and multiple tackles for loss against the talented Lions.
