Football: Escalante 22, Laguna-Acoma 14
After missing a pair of games, quarterback Trey Archuleta ran for 160 yards and two touchdowns, guiding the Lobos (4-4, 1-0 in district) to a closer-than-expected win over the Hawks (3-5, 0-1) in their first district game at home on Oct. 7.
Luka Torrez ran for another 149 yards and a score in the win. Ramon Martinez led the team with nine tackles, and Torrez, Martinez, Braylon Emery and Dominic Arellano all grabbed interceptions in the win.
The much-needed win cameafter a 43-6 loss to Tularosa (2-5) on the road the week before, without both Torrez and Archuleta.
Escalante’s next game comes against McCurdy (3-5) at home on Friday. The Lobos hope for a repeat of last year, when they won 52-0 in Española and held their “senior runner” tradition of giving carries to linemen.
Santa Rosa (6-2) looks like the team to beat in the district, and Escalante will need to step up before their Oct. 21 road matchup.
The Lobos look to have a chance of making the state tournament, currently ranking No. 9 on MaxPreps’ rankings.
Highland 56, Pojoaque 7
The Elks (0-6) found the end zone for the first time since August, now tallying 13 total points this season, but the defense faltered again in their game against the Hornets (5-1).
Pojoaque has surprisingly struggled all season, while they have still yet to play on their home field. The Elks make their home debut along with the start of district play on Friday against Moriarty (5-2).

Pojoaque Volleyball Continues to Cruise
The Elkettes (12-2, 2-0) continued their fantastic start to the season, grabbing an early lead in district play after two wins over Taos (6-10, 1-1) and Moriarty (11-5, 0-1). Pojoaque dropped a set in each, but won the others by dominant margins.
Pojoaque will face its biggest test against rival Los Alamos (10-4, 1-0), whom they have not beaten in their last nine attempts, on the road on Oct. 18.
Lady Trojans Roll Past Lady Bobcats
Mesa Vista volleyball (2-8, 1-1) won its first district game in straight sets over McCurdy (2-8, 0-2) on Oct. 6, winning 25-23, 25-19, 25-20.
The Lady Trojans continued with a loss to Escalante (11-2, 2-0) on Oct. 8, 25-7, 25-12, 25-8. McCurdy won a set off Peñasco (5-6, 1-1) but fell in four sets.
