McCurdy Star Leads Team on Win Streak with Video-Game Numbers

Lucas Martinez recorded his fourth-straight week of 200 or more rushing yards, turning all four into wins for McCurdy (4-1). Martinez and quarterback Jeremaya Roybal both accounted for six touchdowns in another dominating victory.

The Bobcats continued their winning streak, making it their longest streak in over 10 years, with a 70-40 victory over Navajo Prep (2-4) on the road on Sept. 22. During their last four games, the Bobcats have averaged 57 points per game as the offense kicks into high gear, and they have averaged a 37-point margin of victory. They already have their best season since 2016. The Bobcats have averaged more points per game than any other team in New Mexico.

Martinez dominated on the ground, running 32 times for 232 yards and four touchdowns. He also caught four passes for 137 yards and two more scores.

Roybal threw the ball and completed six of his eight passes for 162 yards and two touchdowns. He ran 17 times for 161 yards and three touchdowns, and also returned an interception for a score.

McCurdy looks to continue its win streak at home on Saturday, with another challenge against Cuba (6-0), though all of the Rams’ wins have come against teams at .500 or worse.

Football: Pojoaque 50, Cloudcroft 0

Jonah Villegas ran up and down the field just a week after a scary injury put him in an ambulance. The freshman scat back ran for 283 yards on just six carries, four of which resulted in touchdowns, including a 90-yard score. He also added an interception and a long punt return as the Elks (3-2) easily defeated outmatched Cloudcroft (0-5) on the road on Sept. 23.

Cloudcroft, a 2A opponent making the leap back from 8-man football, was no match for the Elks. Pojoaque scored 36 points in the first quarter and 14 more in the second to end the game with a mercy rule at halftime.

Pojoaque faces a big challenge this week, as they host Robertson (4-1) on Friday. The Cardinals come in fresh off a 42-14 win over top-ranked Dexter in 3A.

Football: Escalante 47, Mescalero Apache 12

The Lobos entered expecting a close game based on team rankings. But instead they turned it into a blowout with a 35-point win at home against a team in the Top 10 of the coaches’ poll. Escalante (2-4) had no trouble defeating Mescalero Apache (2-3) on Sept. 22 in Tierra Amarilla.

Statistics from the game were not available by press deadline.

Escalante hosts its homecoming game next week with a big challenge ahead. The Lobos take on Tularosa (3-2), a team that lost by just six points to Santa Rosa and one point to Jal. A year ago, the Wildcats beat the Lobos by 37, but they are hoping to have a better showing and perhaps for the 300-mile trip to slow Tularosa down.

Española Volleyball Takes on Fellow Sundevils’ Tournament

Española Valley traveled to Albuquerque over the weekend for the Sandia Prep Tournament, and finished in sixth place. The Lady Sundevils lost in straight sets to Robertson, though they battled in the third set to 29-27. They defeated Socorro in the consolation round. And for the fifth-place match, Bloomfield scored a straigth-sets win over Española.

The Sundevils also lost in four sets to Capital on Monday. Despite losing 25-8 in the first set, Española battled back and won the third set 25-16 before losing 25-18 in the fourth set.

After a busy week, Española next plays against St. Michael’s — the top ranked team in 3A — on Thursday.
