Soccer Season Ends

Pojoaque’s boys and girls soccer teams finished their season, while neither made it into the state tournament field.

The boys team finished 8-11-1, with a 1-5 record in district play. Their district win came 1-0 against Moriarty, with Dylan Diaz scoring the goal. But they fell off, losing each of their last four matches.

Pojoaque’s girls finished the year 2-15-2, and 0-6 in districts. In their second-to-last match, they battled Moriarty to a 1-0 loss.

Despite a lack of wins, Pojoaque continued to improve their competitiveness, especially on defense. The Elkettes allowed 3.4 goals per match on average (just 3.0 before their final match against Los Alamos), down from 5.1 in 2022 and 7.0 in 2021.

Lady Eagles Start their Season

Northern New Mexico College started its season on Oct. 27 with a scrimmage game against Lamar Community College.

The Lady Eagles defeated the Runnin’ ‘Lopes 70-54 in the scrimmage game in Lamar, Colo. Ethena Silva, a returning junior, led the Eagles with 18 points. Brianna Marquez, a junior returnee from Las Vegas, N.M. scored 16 points.

Escalante graduate Cipriana Garcia, who joined the Runnin’ ‘Lopes this year, scored three points in the game.

Pojoaque Volleyball Falls to Second Place

The Elkettes (10-10, 4-1 in district) lost to Los Alamos (13-7, 5-0) on Oct. 24, and in the process dropped behind the Hilltoppers in the district standings.

Pojoaque came out strong with a 25-16 win in the first set. Los Alamos battled back and won 25-20 in the second set, and claimed a tight third set 26-24. Then, they finished off the match winning 25-18 in the fourth set.

The two teams will rematch in Los Alamos on Nov. 9. Assuming both teams beat their other district opponents, Pojoaque would have to beat Los Alamos in straight sets, or in four sets with a points tiebreaker, to claim the district title.
