The Española Valley Sundevils had a historic victory on Friday, defeating St. Pius X for their first-ever football state playoff victory. Pick the Athlete of the Week from their historic performance.
Adrick DeLeon
The senior star running back continued his dominant season with another fearsome performance on Friday. The team leaned on him for 31 carries, and he ran for 168 yards and scored three times. He also added 25 receiving yards.
Jack Purdy
The 5-foot-3 senior had a career game for the win. He ran for 220 yards and one touchdown while averaging 11.6 yards per attempt. Purdy was nearly unstoppable behind a dominant offensive line.
Abraham Tamayo
Española’s pass defense came up big against a talented group of skill players. Tamayo grabbed two of the three interceptions in the game, and helped hold St. Pius X to just seven points while the team’s offense ran wild. He also picked up a key fourth down on a backward pass.
