Bella Boies, Mesa Vista Girls Basketball
As Mesa Vista repeated as Northern Rio Grande Tournament champions, their point guard battled illness to lead the team. Her performance was most impressive in the semifinal, scoring 20 points with 10 assists to lead the team to a win over Peñasco. The state’s leading passer added big shots while controlling a balanced offense in the win over Dulce.
Lucas Martinez, McCurdy Boys Basketball
McCurdy’s senior leader reached the 1,000-point career threshold in a big first-round win over Mesa Vista, where he took over with a 12-point third quarter, and made the biggest play of the game with a steal to seal the win. When teams keyed in on him, he still made the big plays, including clutch shots to take third place over Mora.
Luka Torrez, Escalante Boys Basketball
Escalante’s star came to play, though the team came up short in the end. He led Escalante to big wins in the first two rounds, including a 29-point effort in the semifinal against McCurdy. In the championship game, he did his best to carry the team, not getting subbed out at all in the first half, and finished with 14.
Bailey Vigil, Dulce Girls Basketball
Vigil led Dulce throughout the weekend as they went back to the final and established themselves as one of the north’s top teams. She scored 24 in the first round, 10 in the semifinal, and another 16 in the final, being consistently the leading offensive option.
