Santa Fe letter carriers and citizens will rally Sunday, March 23, to sound the alarm to save the U.S. Post Office. The rally, called “Hell No! To Dismantling the Postal Service,” will be at 1420 Cerrillos Road at 12:30 p.m.
Patricia Chacon, president of Local 989 of the National Association of Letter Carriers, said if President Trump succeeds in privatizing the post office, customers will pay more for mail and people in rural areas will lose post offices and be charged more for deliveries.
The Post Office is unique because Congress was given the power to establish it and set policies. People need to stand up for the USPS to show solidarity as Trump tries to dismantle first one service and then another that benefit our neighbors.
The union is fighting to protect the jobs of 640,000 postal employees nationwide and to maintain services to 51.5 million households and business in rural communities.
The local union, which represents 120 workers, expects letter carriers from thoughout the region to join them. Friends of the Post Office are advised to park at the Pacheco Street Office and car pool to the rally or come early and park on side streets.
