Man Says ‘A Couple of Cats’ Could Have Shot at Him

A man was shot at on Nov. 24 at the Santa Cruz Country Store, when two men exited an SUV and approached him, then started hitting and kicking him before one pulled out a gun and fired at him.

Española Police Officer Audrey Martinez responded to the call to assist a New Mexico State Police Officer and spoke with the man who was shot at. He told her he was outside the store when a red SUV pulled up and two men got out. He wasn’t sure what type of SUV they were in and said one man was wearing camouflage pants, while the other was wearing a camouflage shirt.

The man told Martinez that both men approached him and started hitting and kicking him and seemed very angry about a situation but didn’t remember exactly what they were saying, Martinez wrote in her incident report.

The man said the male wearing the camouflage shirt pulled a gun out and fired four rounds in his direction, but he was not hit. Martinez wrote that there were two bullet holes in the man’s vehicle and he had visible injuries from the incident but refused medical attention.

“(Man) said after the incident he drove to the nearby church and stayed in his vehicle for the night,” Martinez wrote. “(Man) denied recognizing the males and was unable to recall having any conflicts with anyone, When I asked (man) who the suspects could have been he stated ‘could have been a couple of cats’ but refused to give me any other information on the individuals, there is (sic) no witnesses.”

Martinez wrote that she found a bullet fragment inside of the man’s vehicle. The fragment was bagged and submitted into evidence. Photos of the damaged vehicle were taken but Martinez wasn’t able to get surveillance footage from the Santa Cruz Country Store. She wrote that the case would be forwarded to the Criminal Investigations Department for further investigation.
