Northern New Mexico College’s Center for the Arts will host a special screening of “The Way We Carry Water” from 6-8 p.m. June 26.
The evening will feature a screening of the award-winning short film followed by a Q&A with writer and director Makaio Frazier and members of the cast.
Set in the rural landscapes of northern New Mexico, “The Way We Carry Water” follows Marcos, a young man grappling with the sudden loss of his beloved grandfather, Iván. As he navigates grief, Marcos must confront the responsibility of preserving his family’s acequia — a lifeline that sustains both their land and their traditions.
Filmed across all four seasons in Northern New Mexico, the film explores the connections between family, culture, and the natural world. Through poetic storytelling and naturalistic cinematography.
Rather than serving as a documentary, “The Way We Carry Water” honors acequia culture through fiction, highlighting the quiet ways knowledge and belonging are passed between generations.
Since its premiere, the film has been recognized at festivals across the Southwest, including selections at the Santa Fe International Film Festival, Arizona International Film Festival, Taos Film Festival, and Las Cruces International Film Festival, where it received both the Audience Choice Award and Best Local Short.
Admission to the event is $10.
