Winter Sports Make Way for Spring

The high school basketball season wrapped up its district tournaments and the stage is set for the state tournament. Meanwhile, the spring sports began their overlapping season with baseball and softball getting underway.

Boys basketball

Feb. 23

Coronado 43, Northwest 30 Feb. 25

To’hajiilee 75, Coronado 57 Feb. 26

Pojoaque Valley 56, Española Valley 49 Serafin Mendez collected a double-double by scoring 18 points with 10 rebounds for the host Elks (14-13) in the District 2-4A semifinals, and Joziah Sanchez added 12 and Joshua Gonzales 11 points plus three steals against the Sundevils (9-18).

Hozho Academy 49, Dulce 47 The host Lady Hawks (1710), could not hold a one-point lead heading into the final quarter of the District 1-2A semifinals, but Jamien Vicenti Jr. and Adolf Vigil each had 10 points.

Escalante 48, Mora 40 The host Lobos (21-6) came from a 21-17 halftime deficit in the District 2-5A semifinals, tying it going into the fourth quarter, then taking control over the final eight minutes.

Feb. 28

Taos 58, Pojoaque Valley 50 The visiting Elks (14-14) could not make up for a slow start in the District 2-4A championship game, with only Joziah Sanchez reaching double figures with 14 points.

Mesa Vista 59, Escalante 50 The host Trojans (23-4) used a big second quarter, outscoring the Lobos (217) 18-5 to erase a five-point, first-quarter deficit to pull away for the District 5-2A tournament championship.

Girls Basketball

Feb. 23

Questa 55, Escalante 34 The host Lady Wildcats got 17 points from Alyse Lovato in the opening round of the District 2-5A tournament to eliminate the Lady Lobos (7-19).

McCurdy 52, Mora 12 Dulce 44, Rehoboth Christian 37 Feb. 24

Coronado 51, Tse’yi’Gai 46 Mia Gallegos scored 21 points and Tracea Negale added 16 for the host Lady Leopards (15-12), who trailed by a point entering the fourth quarter in the opening round of the District 1-1A tournament.

McCurdy 39, Questa 27 Feb. 25

Laguna Acoma 49, Dulce 39 Host Laguna Acoma got off to a big lead with a 28-13 halftime advantage, which was enough to hold off the Lady Hawks’ (14-12) late surge.

McCurdy 45, Peñasco 39 Coronado 57, Pine Hill 52 Feb. 27

Mesa Vista 48, McCurdy 40 Aaliyah Boies had 27 points with 10 steals and six rebounds for the host Trojans (25-2) in the District 5-2A championship game. Aubrey Maestas added 14 points with five assists and the team combined for 27 steals over the Bobcats (21-9), who fell behind 31-16 at halftime. Pojoaque Valley 48, Española Valley 39 Feb. 28

Valencia 10, Pojoaque Valley 1 The visiting Elks (0-1) only managed two hits against the Jaguars, with Isaiah Martinez having a double and an RBI. Noah Torres was strong on the mound, going two innings without giving up a base runner in the Valencia Tournament.

Feb. 27

Pojoaque Valley 6, Silver 4 The Elks (1-1) scored five runs in the fourth inning and made it stand up against the Fighting Colts in the second game of the Valencia Tournament.

Feb. 28

Gallup 8, Española Valley 5; Gallup 6, Española Valley 1 Late rallies in both ends of a doubleheader came up short for the visiting Sundevils in the season-opener Belen 11, Pojoaque Valley 1

Softball

Feb. 26

Belen 22, Pojoaque Valley 0 Mya Talache picked up the only hit for the host Elkettes (0-1) in their season opener against the Lady Eagles.

Feb. 28

Sandia Prep 8, Española Valley 7; Sandia Prep 25, Española Valley 18 Gabriella Segura had two RBIs in the opener of a doubleheader for the host Sundevils (0-2), and Dionicka Maestas had two hits, including a triple, but Sandia Prep managed to push across the winning run in the top of the seventh to win. In the second game, Maestas had five hits and five RBIs and Aliah Villalobos had three extra base hits and scored five runs for Española, but Sandia Prep scored eight in the fourth inning and six in the sixth to take the sweep.
