As a fairly recent New Mexico resident, I feel that I would be remiss In not writing to you to voice my concern over an issue which diminishes our common humanity: The animal abuse
perpetuated on helpless and dependent dogs and other animals in this area is a disgrace.
I write this as I read of yet another incident, published in your paper just a few days ago, about the seven puppies that had been left in the care of Ron Gallegos, the Espanola Middle School coach, by Nelson Valdez, the owner of the dogs. Both of these men should be held responsible for their cruel, irresponsible, callous, reprehensible behavior. Fines, community service and charges should be pursued by the District Attorney’s office.
Furthermore, these individuals and others that are found guilty of animal abuse, should also be prevented from owning animals in the future by the courts. If they violate the court order additional consequences should follow. And if a charge is brought the second time for animal abuse they, and other abusers, should reflect on their inhumane behavior by enjoying the confines of jail. In most states, animal abuse is not tolerated. Here it seems to be one case after another of the appalling abuse of animals.
While this may seem overly harsh to some, it is past time to make a strong stand against animal abuse wherever it is found and under any circumstances. Statistics and research have demonstrated time and again that individuals who abuse helpless animals have a propensity to inflict the same abuse on individuals.
It is a mark of a civilized society that kindness, care and love are given to the most defenseless of it’s creatures.
