The Española Farmers Market will host its ninth annual Biggest Vegetable and Best Poem Contest Oct. 6.
The big vegetables will be displayed all morning and the selections of winning vegetables and poetry will be announced at 1:30 p.m. Ribbons will be awarded in several categories: biggest pumpkin, biggest heirloom squash, biggest root vegetable, biggest apple, biggest chile, oddest vegetable and wild-card vegetable.
Chimayó author Chellis Glendinning will judge the vegetable entries. La Puebla poet Joan Logghe will select and read the winning poems in the children’s poetry contest.
Copies of the 2005-2006 double edition of A Farming Chapbook will be available.
The Market convenes every Monday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at 1005 N. Railroad Ave. In addition to selling fall vegetables, late tomatoes and horno-roasted chicos, it also hosts a free children’s book exchange each week. Book donations are always welcome.
