Former Coronado High School girls basketball coach David Chavez got to coach his last game in a special way at the 2018 North-South All-Star basketball game, June 8, at Albuquerque High School.
Chavez, who is leaving Coronado to become an assistant coach for the women’s basketball team at Northern New Mexico College, had the opportunity to take the court one more time with his Lady Leopard seniors, cousins Sol and Alia Vigil.
The North lost 78-44 to the South squad who was composed of four players from the 2A state champion Fort Sumner/House High School and two players from the 1A champions, Elida High School.
“Besides losing, it was a really fun experience and a great way to end, for the time being, my high school coaching tenure,” Chavez said. “I was able to bring my Coronado assistant Nathan Serrano with me, who was really a big help.”
Chavez played under Northern women’s coach Tony Gallegos when he was a player at Coronado.
“He asked me if I wanted to join his staff and I accepted,” Chavez said. “It’s a great opportunity for me to finish my education also.”
The Vigil cousins were an integral part of last season’s Lady Leopards team, who finished 21-8, before losing in the quarterfinals of the state tournament to Des Moines High School.
Sol Vigil averaged 7.7 points, 4.8 rebounds and 6.3 assists per game and Alia Vigil averaged a double-double (11.5 points and 10.7 rebounds per game).
