(SUNfoto by George Morse) Carlos Sandoval of Grants works at the W. H. Moore Cash Lumber yard in Hernandez cutting timbers from logs harvested from the Jicarilla Apache Reservation. Workers with the skills to operate the equipment used in sawmills and to process the timber are harder to find as sawmills have shut down throughout the Southwest in recent years. Sandoval has to travel to Española to find employment, returning home on weekends.
