Diego Brusuelas may do triple-duty next school year for his alma mater.
The 2001 Escalante graduate has been named the boys head basketball coach to go along with his current jobs as head football coach and head track and field coach.
Brusuelas served as an assistant basketball coach under Milnor Manzanares for the last two seasons. Manzanares chose not to return as coach after this past season.
“I’m excited and looking forward to the challenge,” Brusuelas said. “At a school like Escalante we share athletes already. It’ll help because the kids will be so familiar with my ways, my discipline and what I expect from them.”
Brusuelas, 27, said his youth will be an advantage.
“This is the time to take on something like this, now that I’m young and have the energy, ” Brusuelas said. “I don’t have a family yet, so my responsibilities are geared towards the school and the kids.
Brusuelas has been offered but has not yet accepted the track and field coaching position, but said he would fill all three coaching positions if needed.
“Being a track coach is just so rewarding,” he said. “It’ll definitely keep me busy. A little less fishing time for me.”
Chama School District Superintendent Anthohny Casados said the position of athletic director, which Casados has been filling since former athletic director and assistant principal Paulino “Sonny” Villegas resigned Dec. 31, 2009, will be assigned to Escalante Principal Albert Martinez.
Prior to his resignation, Villegas had been placed on unpaid leave following his arrest Sept. 27 on charges of aggravated battery on a household member and assault on a household member. He was accused of biting his wife and pulling her hair. A trial date has still not been set in that case.
