Escalante Football Interrupted by Storm

The weather may have been the winner when the Escalante High School Lobos traveled to Questa Oct. 11 for a District 1A match-up.

“It was crazy,” Escalante coach Jesus Maes said. “There was lightning, 60 mile-per-hour winds and hail.”

The Wildcats took an 8-0 lead, but the Lobos answered with a touchdown run by John Romero and a two-point conversion to tie the score.

Another touchdown run by Justin Atencio and an extra-point kick gave the Lobos a 15-8 lead. As the weather worsened and lightning threatened the safety of the players, the officials stopped the game with two minutes left in the first half.

Play never resumed and because two quarters of play had not been completed, the game is not considered official. As of Monday, it wasn’t counted toward either team’s record.

“I’ll have to call and get a ruling from the New Mexico Activities Association Tuesday,” Maes said Monday.

The Lobos travel to Clayton Friday to play the Yellowjackets, who defeated Escalante 14-6 in last year’s Class A quarterfinals.
