Fishing Report for the Week of Dec. 4

ABIQUIU LAKE: Fishing was slow for all species. Fishing pressure continued to be very light.

CHAMA RIVER: Monday morning water flows below El Vado and Abiquiu dams were 58 and 55 cubic feet per second, respectively. Fishing above and below El Vado Lake was good using wooly buggers, leeches, green Panther Martins and night crawlers for trout.

EAGLE NEST LAKE: There was some kokanee snagging activity this past week between the boat ramps in the early morning hours. A few of the fish were soft but most were in good shape. Trout fishing from anchored boats and from the bank was fair for anglers using power bait and roe sacs. Trolling for rainbows was fair-to-good using light line gear with spinners, spoons and Platte River specials. Fishing for perch was slow.

EL VADO LAKE: Trout fishing was slow-to-fair using power bait, salmon eggs and spinners. The best action was reported near the dam and at the upper end of the lake.

FENTON LAKE: As of Sunday there was a thin layer of ice on the lake which was unsafe for fishing. For updated ice conditions, contact the park office at (575) 829-3630.

HERON LAKE: Kokanee snagging was slow but there were a few fish taken by anglers working near the dam and in the Willow Creek area. Trout fishing was very good for anglers using roe sacs, power bait and salmon eggs in the snagging areas.

JEMEZ WATERS: Water flow on the Jemez River as of Monday morning was 28 cubic feet per second near Jemez Springs. Trout fishing on the Jemez and East Fork was fair using egg patterns, wooly buggers, salmon eggs and worms. Fishing on the Cebolla was slow.

NAVAJO LAKE: Fishing for smallmouth bass was slow-to-fair using jigs and tubes in 20-to-25 feet of water.

RIO GRANDE: The water flow Monday morning at the Taos Junction Bridge was 360 cubic feet per second. Trout fishing was fair-to-good using streamers, spinners, jerk baits and night crawlers.

SAN JUAN: Water flow below Navajo Lake as of Monday morning was 516 cubic feet per second. Trout fishing was good through the Quality Waters. Best flies were UFOs, zebra midges, streamers, wooly buggers, dead chickens and parachute adams. Fishing through the bait water was good for anglers using trout-colored jerk baits, gold Kastmasters, night crawlers, salmon eggs and assorted flies.

STORRIE LAKE: Fishing was fair using salmon eggs, cheese and power bait for trout.

CATCHES OF THE WEEK

Nick Campos, 15, of Rio Rancho, caught and released a 20-inch brown trout on the Chama River Nov. 29 using a leather leech. He caught and released several fish in the 15-to-19 inch range using the same pattern.
