The federal Natural Resource Conservation Service has begun accepting applications for its new Conservation Stewardship Program.

The program pays agricultural and forestry producers to adopt additional conservation activities and improve and maintain old ones.

Individuals, legal entities and Indian pueblos selected for contracts can receive up to $40,000 a year, depending on the applicant’s land-use type and the conservation measures applied. Recipients who adopt crop-rotation may receive a supplemental payment.

The first cut-off date for applications is Sept. 30.

For more information, including eligibility requirements and application procedures, visit www.ncrs.gov/new_csp/ or call Thomas Gonzales at 753-3508 ext. 3.
