I’m an 85-year-old woman who best identifies herself as a grandma, great-grandma and great-great grandma.
In the twilight of my life I have two remaining loves: my family and my country.
I was born Oct. 4, 1934 and have lived through 14 presidential administrations.
I have been a Republican most of my life. Recently I have this feeling that the party I’ve been loyal to and believed in has lost their way in every sense of the word. I cannot seem to reconcile my own beliefs with how un-American it has become. My principles are now wholly separate from the Republican party’s.
I can recall specific instances throughout history when delegations from our once great nation would travel to other countries to promote democracy and assist in facilitating an honest and accurate voting process. Now it seems as if we disrupt these processes and endeavor to do everything we can to remove this crucial aspect of society from burgeoning nations.
My rationale is solely based on leaving this world a better place for my family, and those who will inherit it, and its problems after I’m gone.
Since Pres. Donald Trump has taken office he has decimated the system of checks and balances, which was put in place to protect us and curb those politicians whose aspirations exceed the responsibilities of office.
The image of Trump on stage clutching our flag does not feel patriotic to me. Rather, it strikes me as obsessive, a man coveting our country.
