The Third Annual Española Valley Chili Cook Off raised about $15,000 for the San Martin de Porres Soup Kitchen, soup kitchen Director Suzan Roybal said.
About 500 people attended the event, which was held April 25 at the Big Rock Casino. Dozens of businesses, organizations and individuals participated in the event by providing samples of their home-cooked salsas and chile.
Roybal said the money will be used for operating expenses such as purchasing food. Currently, the soup kitchen spends about $500 a month on food.
“I easily could spend a lot more,” Roybal said explaining the money could be used to purchase fresh vegetables and meat on a regular basis.
Another event will also benefit the soup kitchen this week. Anyone who brings a canned good to the National Dance Institute’s performances at Española Valley High School scheduled for Thursday (4/30) and Friday will get in for free. The student performances will be held Thursday at 9:45 and 11:15 a.m. and Friday at 5:45 and 7:30 p.m. The canned goods will be donated to the kitchen.
