A Coyote man who pleaded guilty to molesting his niece was sentenced to three years in prison plus time served Aug. 22 in state District Court, court documents state.
Lionel Madrid, who turned 43 the day of his sentencing, was originally charged with two counts of criminal sexual contact of a minor, but pleaded down to one, for touching and making oral contact with his 15-year-old niece’s breasts after she babysat his children in December 2005, documents state. After the incident, Madrid confessed the act to his mother, according to a police report.
Madrid was ordered by Judge Michael Vigil to spend the first year of his incarceration at the STOP sexual offender treatment program in Las Vegas, Assistant District Attorney Barbara Romo said.
Madrid’s sentencing had been delayed since June to allow time for psychiatrist Dr. Moss Aubrey to evaluate his potential for rehabilitation. Because he took responsibility for his crime by admitting it to family and police, and based on other test results, Madrid was determined to have a low risk of reoffending, Romo said. The sentence was exactly what Romo asked the judge for, she said.
