Letter: ‘NNMC Loses STEM Giant’

Published:

Dear, Editor:

Northern New Mexico recently lost a giant of STEM education. Dr. Lorenzo Gonzales, a New Mexican whose family goes back numerous generations in his native state, dedicated more than 50 years of his life to teaching. He was an award-winning high school science teacher in Cuba, NM for 28 years, taught at Santa Fe Community College for two years, and then trained New Mexico’s teachers in math and science through the Math and Science Academy, Los Alamos National Laboratory for 22 years. Dr. Gonzales profoundly impacted thousands of students and teachers over his incredible career. He was an innovator who created the ICFLP framework; a guide for math instruction still used by many teachers. For those who had the honor of knowing and working with him, Dr. Gonzales will be remembered for his brilliance, kindness, and steadfast support of New Mexico’s students and teachers. You will be missed, Dr. Gonzales!
