A recent video about Española has been circulating online, showing only the abandoned buildings, poverty, and addiction that exist in our town. While these challenges are real, the video failed to show the true heart of our community.

Española is a place where cultures unite, where neighbors know each other, where families gather, and where community matters. We are a town of working-class people, tradesmen, small business owners, artists, and farmers — people who take pride in their craft and their community.

We are surrounded by incredible natural beauty, from the Sangre de Cristo and Jémez mountains to the Rio Grande that flows through the heart of our valley. Our sunsets, small communities, and our landmarks tell stories of resilience and belonging. It’s a place where people greet each other on the street, where local traditions are passed down, and where there’s a deep sense of connection to the land and to each other.

As a young person who has chosen to build my life and raise my family here, I believe in the future of Española. We cannot ignore the challenges we face, but we also cannot let outsiders define us by them. Our story is one of strength, hope, and heart.

Let’s remind each other — and the world — of all the good that exists here. Together, we can shape a brighter future for the Española Valley.
