(SUNfoto by George Morse) This Los Matachines dance was performed Christmas Day (12/25) at Ohkay Owingeh Pueblo. Los Matachines figures include Monarca (above), portrayed by Anthony R. J. Garcia, and a young girl dressed in white called La Malinche, portrayed by Dana Atencio. The dance is performed to music provided by fiddles and guitars. Some trace the dance back to Medieval Spain, while others trace its origins to the Aztecs.
