An man was arrested in Medanales after allegedly threatening his parents with a shovel and trying to set their car on fire.

State Police officers responding to a domestic disturbance the afternoon of Oct. 10 encountered a man walking toward their vehicle, officer Joshua Ramirez wrote in a probable cause statement. Officers handcuffed the man, later identified as Donnie Salazar, 29, of Albuquerque, when he refused to stop and take his hands out of his pockets, Ramirez wrote.

Salazar’s parents later told police they had escorted their son off the property the previous night following an altercation in which he tried to burn one of their vehicles, according to the statement. The next day, his parents called police when he allegedly picked up a shovel and threatened to “take care of them and take care of the cops who show up.”

Salazar faces two charges of aggravated assault against a household member and one charge each of resisting an officer and disorderly conduct. Assistant District Attorney Kathryn Thwaits dropped two additional charges of resisting an officer and one charge of resisting arrest, court records state.

Salazar is awaiting arraignment and is being held at the Rio Arriba County Jail, according to jail staff. Salazar and his parents could not be reached for comment.
