After another week of two district games, the McCurdy Charter School volleyball team remains winless in district play. The Lady Bobcats first matched up against Monte Del Sol Charter School, Oct. 17, at McCurdy.
They had not played the Lady Dragons since the second game of the season, Aug. 26, where McCurdy swept Monte Del Sol in three sets. Both teams look much different at this point in the season, and the Lady Bobcats had difficulty closing out the game with a win.
McCurdy lost the match by a score of 3-2, after winning the first two sets.
“We should have beat them in three, maybe four,” McCurdy head coach Roberto DeVargas said. “We won the first two sets, and then, I don’t know what happened … They got a little momentum on their side when they won the third set, and we couldn’t recover.”
The Lady Bobcats got off to a quick start, taking the first set by a score of 25-14, and then the second, 25-23. The third set was a contest, and Monte Del Sol came out on top, 25-19.
After that third set, the morale dropped over on the McCurdy side, and the Lady Dragons took full advantage. They won the fourth set, 25-15, and then the fifth set, 25-11.
DeVargas said the loss to Monte Del Sol was especially hard on the team, as the Lady Bobcats felt the game should be a guaranteed win.
When they traveled to play Santa Fe Preparatory School, Oct. 20, they knew a serious opponent faced them.
They lost in three sets to the Blue Griffins for their first district game, Oct. 10, and a similar result awaited the Lady Bobcats, 10 days later.
The game, played at Santa Fe Prep, featured a strong home crowd for the Blue Griffins, complete with a loud student section.
The noise factored into the Lady Bobcats’ play, and they put fewer points on the scoreboard than their first match-up against Santa Fe Prep. They lost the first and third set by a score of 25-9, and they finished the second set at the losing end of 25-12.
McCurdy’s district is composed of Santa Fe Prep, Monte Del Sol and Dulce High School. At the moment, Dulce is undefeated in district play, sitting at the top, followed by Monte Del Sol and Santa Fe Prep.
McCurdy sit at the bottom, but for DeVargas, not all hope is lost.
“I’ve seen a great deal of improvement in all of them,” DeVargas said. “One thing that I’ve noticed is that they’re reacting and playing the game.”
One week and two more district games await the Lady Bobcats. With two losses in those games, McCurdy is still guaranteed to finish the season with a .500 overall record.
