Free flu shots for military veterans are now available at the Veterans Affairs Community-Based Outreach Clinic in Española.
Veterans may also receive flu shots in building 41 of the Veterans Affairs (VA) Medical Center in Albuquerque, located at 1501 San Pedro Drive SE.
Shots are free any veteran currently enrolled with the New Mexico VA healthcare system. Veterans not yet enrolled can still get a free flu shot if they bring identification and a copy of their discharge papers.
Typically, up to 20 percent of the population nationwide is stricken by the flu. It remains one of the leading killers of senior citizens, killing up to 36,000 people every winter from flu-related complications and hospitalizing more than 200,000 people.
